Mother's Day with Carmen McNamara
In the lead up to Mother's Day, we spoke to Carmen McNamara—Director of Skin Fairy, and proud mum of three—for a conversation on motherhood, balancing business, and the lessons she’s learned along the way.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received about being a mother?
My own mother, Julie, always told me that no one knows my children better than I do. She encouraged me to trust my instincts and follow my gut when it comes to their needs in every aspect of life. Because of her unwavering support, I’ve built confidence in my ability to make the best decisions for my children. I rarely second-guess myself (at least not for too long!) because she has helped me strengthen that "confidence muscle." Her wisdom has been a guiding light in my journey as a mother.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of combining work and motherhood for you?
The most rewarding part is that I haven’t had to choose between the two, something I’m incredibly proud of. I always dreamed of being a mother, but I also love my career. Both bring me joy and fulfillment in different ways, and I feel fortunate that I can pursue both without sacrificing one for the other. It’s rewarding to break the common misconception that you must choose between motherhood and a career.
How do you stay present with your family, even after a busy or stressful day at work?
The moment I step through the door, I’m in "mum mode." My phone goes on silent in the office, and I focus entirely on my children. I change out of my work clothes, start cooking, playing, cuddling, and simply being with them. No matter how tough my day has been, coming home is always the highlight, it's where I feel the most love in the world. My children constantly remind me of what truly matters.
How do you make time for yourself outside of work and motherhood? What activities help you recharge?
I love this question! I prioritise "me time" just like any other commitment, whether it’s a Pilates class, a blow-dry appointment, or a skin treatment. My husband fully supports this also, and in our home, it’s understood that we take care of ourselves to be the best parents. I schedule my beauty, wellness, and fitness appointments in advance so they’re non-negotiable. Taking time for myself helps me recharge mentally and physically, allowing me to be more present and patient with my family. When I feel my best, I can give my best to my children.
What have you learned about yourself through your experience as a mother?
I’ve learned that I am strong and resilient. I survived three HG (Hyperemesis Gravidarum) pregnancies with severe sickness, hospital visits, and IV treatments, all while building a business and bringing life into the world. Women often underestimate how powerful we are as mothers, motherhood has been the most surreal and rewarding experience of my life, and I’m endlessly grateful for my three beautiful children and what its shown me about how strong I really am as I build businesses with babies on my hips.
